Bedford Central Library – Suspended Ceiling

The Client

Bedford Borough Council (Bedford Central Library)

Bedford Borough Council is the local authority of the Borough of Bedford in Bedfordshire, England. It is a unitary authority, having the powers of a non-metropolitan county and district council combined.

The Challenge

To supply and install a new suspended ceiling at Bedford Central Library to update the 1960’s building, conceal modern fire detection systems and provide support for a new state-of-the-art interactive lighting system.

This project needed to be completed under the Government Covid-19 Construction Guidelines to ensure the safety of our staff, other Contractors, and the Library Staff.

The Solution

The installation of a 1,400 square metre new suspended ceiling and 140 linear metres of fascia spread over four floors of the public library space, café and offices. This work required the removal and reinstallation within the new ceiling system of the fire alarm detectors, CCTV cameras and alarm system detectors.

To fulfil our Health and Safety obligations, safe working practices utilising social distancing, PPE, and handwashing and sanitising were developed and implemented together with the relevant Risk Assessments, Method Statements and recording procedures.
